You do not have to stray from your healthy lifestyle even when eating out. It does, however, take a little discipline. You must ask questions and choose wisely, but eating out can still be nutritious and enjoyable. Here are some hints on how to stay on track while eating out.
- Drink water or unsweetened iced tea Water is always the best choice, but tea can be enjoyable too. Stay away from alcoholic beverages and sugary sodas. Diet drinks have additives you don’t need.
- Skip the bread The bread may be free with your meal, but you will pay the price with your nutrition. You will be able to have plenty of carbohydrates with your meal if you abstain now.
- Order simple, fresh items on the menu Order items that have the fewest ingredients such as, chicken and mixed vegetables, steak and a side salad(oil/vinegar dressing), or fish and a vegetable. Stay away from dishes with sauces or breading. Choose vegetables or salads instead of potatoes or pastas.
Most restaurants are happy to change menu items to simple choices when asked to do so. You must be willing to ask questions so that you know how your food is being prepared. You then can make decisions to change the dish if needed. Don’t be afraid to eat the way you want to eat even while you are out. I can always find great food when I eat out, but I never compromise my healthy choices. You can find great, healthy food while you are eating out…have no doubt.
